How close to the event horizon of a black hole does one have to get before being sucked in is inevitable? Always our attention is first and foremost attracted to the light rather than the darkness. Taking a picture of a black hole took international collaboration, built on a solid foundation of innumerable contributions over eons, with years of work focusing the whole world on an extreme object 55 million light years from everything familiar. Working together, believing in each other, nothing is impossible. Standing alone we are limited, vulnerable, and lost in the dark.
